Unit 4 — The Water Cycle

Science · Vocabulary Review

Evaporation.
The sun heats water in oceans, lakes and rivers, turning it into water vapor that rises into the air.
Condensation.
Water vapor cools as it rises and turns back into tiny liquid droplets, forming clouds.
Precipitation.
Droplets in a cloud combine until they are heavy enough to fall as rain, snow, sleet or hail.
Collection.
Fallen water gathers in oceans, lakes, rivers and underground, where the cycle begins again.
Transpiration.
Plants release water vapor into the air through tiny openings in their leaves.
Runoff.
Water that flows over the ground surface into streams and rivers instead of soaking in.
